- What was the first time you remember hearing about the conflict between the soviet union (or the USSR) and the United States? Tell me about it. He had a cousin who was part Russian and whenever they would play, they would talk about it. He remembered president gorbachev and the cold war.
- What does the term “Cold War” mean to you? What do you remember seeing or reading in the news about the Cold War, or conflict between the USSR and the United States? He remembered hearing about how Russia had missiles pointed at US and how the US had missiles pointed back.
- What books, movies, cartoons, or posters did you see that villainized either country, capitalists, communists, or dealt with the Cold War? How did they shape your impressions at that time? He remembered seeing Hulk Hogan represent US fight Nicki Volkoff who represented Russia. He also remembered Russia boycotting the 84 summer olympics.
- What were you taught in school and at home about the conflict? What did your school and family teach about nuclear threats and nuclear war? His mother didn't know english at the time. In the 4th or 5th grade is when he heard about the missiles being pointed at each other. He also knew the fallout shelters and his school would do drills about how to handle the situation if necessary.
- Were you or any of your family members ever afraid that there would be a hot war or nuclear war between the two countries? When did you feel that way? If yes, did you do anything to prepare or get ready for it? Yes his family was very scared about the possibilities of a war breaking loose. He said that he only really thought about what was going on when he was bored since he was just kid.
- What aspects of the Space Race, or competition to explore space, do you remember? Was "Space Race" a phrase that you remember using at the time? What did it mean to you? He doesn't remember anything about the Space race.
- Can you think of any specific examples of rivalry between the USA and USSR in other areas of life, such as sports? The olympics when Russia boycotted and when US boycotted Russia. Also wrestling because of Hulk Hogan. When he would play with his cousin (who was part Russian) they would pretend that they were ambassadors from their countries.
- Do you remember the Berlin Wall coming down? How did it make you feel? How have your feelings about that era changed since 1989 and the Berlin Wall coming down? Mr. Sanchez was happy when the Berlin wall came down because that meant that families could be reunited.
- What lessons should students today take away from the Cold War? Students should be more cognitive.
